Man!

I hate to study grammar.

I hate it.

I’ve always hated it.

God.

So when I started studying English,

I was like you.

I had a couple of textbooks with me,

hating my guts not to understand

a single grammar rule in those textbooks.

Stupid!

You are stupid Kambiz…

damn it…

But wait for a second.

I can speak English fluently

but still can’t explain any grammar rules….

WHAT!

Yeah

something has happened

during the process of studying.

Let’s talk about it.

When I was 22 I googled

“What is the best book possible

to learn English with?

”

And here you go

an article from Zabanshenas.

That’s how I got to know them.

The article mentioned a quote from Stephen Krashen:

“Reading extensively is the most effective way

to improve our reading comprehension

and vocabulary size.

With reading extensively,

you’re gonna be able to learn grammar and writing.

Just like in real life.

”

Wait a sec… WHAT?

Who the hell is this dude?

Let me search…

Linguist

Krashen

is professor emeritus at the University

of Southern California,

who moved from the linguistics department

to the faculty of the School of Education in 1994.

He is a linguist,

educational researcher,

and political activist.

Okay…

So he’s the guy…

I think I can trust him…

I haven’t improved much with

the traditional method,

and to be honest, it was boring for me.

Therefore I took a shot,

and the result was absolutely amazing.

Holy Moly…

This method works like this:

one:

you choose something comprehensible

that you understand at least 85 to 95 percent of.

Number two:

you choose what you love to read.

So everyday I’ve picked out a book,

read and enjoyed it.

Since that time,

I think I’ve read more than 1000 material

including books, comic books,

manga books, articles,

guides, blog posts, etc.

…

Every day I would read something.

Now I don’t even know

how exactly I put my words together;

I do!

If you ask me a grammar question,

I can’t answer that,

but I can use it when I’m speaking.

Just like Persian.

Of course, I still have some grammatical mistakes,

but it’s fine because I feel more confident,

comfortable, creative,

focused, composed,

and, most importantly,

having a lot of fun with English.

So this was my mistake of

putting too much emphasis on textbooks

to learn grammar.

Use those books when you need them

but don’t overuse them.

just like Kato Lomb said:

Learn grammar through language,

not language through grammar.
