there are acronyms

and abbreviations.

But which is which?

An acronym is formed from the first

or first few letters of a series of words

and it’s pronounced as a word.

An initialism is just like an acronym.

But you cannot pronounce it as a word

instead you have to say the individual letters

when you pronounce it.

DIY (Do It Yourself)

SMS (Short Message Service)

Abbreviations usually have a few letters

of a single word removed.

The remaining letters are combined

and stand in place of that longer word.

or minimum

You use these abbreviations only in a writing

but you say the full word

when you speak them out loud.

an abbreviation always ends with a period

in British English, however,

do not use the period

if the abbreviation ends in the same letter
