In this video we wanna talk about the correct pronunciation of our country’s name.

Which one is correct?

/ɪˈɹɑːn/ or /ɪˈɹæn/

Well, both are correct!

From Iran, “a Separation” directed by Asghar Farhadi.

They escaped by crossing the border to Iran.

I mean, China I can understand, or Russia or Iran

The presidents of Iran, Russia, Israel and France have all agreed to your terms.

One of the American pronunciations is:

/aɪˈɹæn/

I’m not a big fan of this one.

But these people are from Iran and they really don’t know that they’re offering too much.

You might say:

This is OUR country’s name and the others MUST pronounce it the way we do.

Not really.

Of course the native pronunciation of a country’s name is correct

but when it enters another language that language changes to make it easier for its native speakers.

Sometimes the new pronunciation sounds completely different but it’s not considered wrong.

For example this country

The natives call it

Österreich

The Americans call it

Austria

(a little different pronunciation)

But we call it

“Otrish”

(a completely different pronunciation)
