As the investigation progresses, the police discover that Ruby was not the only victim that night. Another girl, Pamela Reeves, a 16-year-old Girl Guide who wanted to be an actress, was also killed in a car accident. Her body was burned beyond recognition, but Miss Marple realizes that it was actually Ruby's body that was in the car, and that Pamela's body was the one in the library. She deduces that the killer swapped the bodies to mislead the police and to delay the identification of Ruby.

Josie had also planted some of Ruby's belongings in Pamela's room, to make it look like she had run away.
