داستان قورباغه و گاو نر

On a lily pad in the little stream that flowed at the bottom of the meadow, there lived an old Frog. He was a big frog and he was very proud of his size. All the other frogs were in awe of him and treated him with the greatest respect.

روی یک گل سوسن در یک رودخانه‌ی کوچک که در انتهای چمنزار بود، قورباغه‌ای زندگی می‌کرد. او یک قورباغه بزرگ بود و به جثه‌ی بزرگش افتخار می‌کرد. همه‌ی قوررباغه‌های دیگر از او می‌ترسیدند و با بیشترین احترام با او برخورد می‌کردند.

So did all the other creatures. The shining blue dragonflies that hovered over the stream during the day took great care to keep far out of the reach of his long sticky tongue. So did the little midges that fluttered by in a soft cloud in the evenings. Even the fishes in the stream were careful not to annoy him. The Frog ruled his watery kingdom unchallenged.

تمام موجودات دیگر نیز به همین شکل. سنجاقک‌های آبی که در طول روز روی رودخانه شناور بودند، بسیار مراقب بودند تا از زبان بلند و چسبناک قورباغه دور باشند. همینطور حشره‌های کوچکی که در میان مه غروب بال می‌زدند. حتی ماهی‌های رودخانه مراقب بودند تا او را اذیت نکنند. قورباغه بدون هیچ چالشی به منطقه آبی حکومت می‌کرد.

The Farmer who owned the meadow by the stream also had an old Ox. The Ox had worked hard for the Farmer all his life. He had helped him plough his fields. Yoked to an old wooden cart, he had carried his crops to market and his children to school. But now the Ox was growing old. He no longer had the strength to work as hard as he used to.

کشاورزی که صاحب علفزار کنار رودخانه بود هم یک گاو نر بزرگ و پیر داشت. گاو تمام عمرش را سخت برای کشاورز کار کرده بود. او در شخم زدن زمین به کشاورز کمک می‌کرد. او با یک گاری چوبی و قدیمی محصولاتش را به بازار و فرزندانش را به مدرسه می‌برد. اما حالا گاو پیر شده بود. او دیگر قدرت کار کردن سخت مانند سابق را نداشت.

The Farmer was fond of his old Ox and grateful for all the hard work he had done over the years. He did not want to sell him. Instead, he decided to let the Ox spend his old age in peace, in the meadow by the stream.

کشاورز گاو نر را دوست داشت و برای تمام تلاش‌های سختش در این سال‌ها از او قدردان بود. او نمی‌خواست گاو را بفروشد. در عوض تصمیم گرفت به گاو نر اجازه دهد دوران کهن‌سالی خود را با آرامش در چمنزار کنار رودخانه بگذراند.

One fine morning, the Ox moved into the meadow. He wandered around the meadow, surveying his new home. The grass was soft and green and wildflowers dotted the ground. The Ox was happy. He planned to spend his days grazing on the sweet juicy grass and basking in the sun.

یک روز صبح گاو نر به چمنزار رفت. در اطراف چمنزار پرسه می‌زد و خانه جدیدش را بررسی می‌کرد. علف‌ها نرم و سبز بودند و گل‌های وحشی روی زمین پراکنده بودند. گاو قصد داشت دوران پیری خود را با چریدن علف شیرین، آبدار و آفتاب خورده بگذراند.

The little creatures of the meadow stared at the Ox in fear and awe. The butterflies flew hurriedly out of his way. The hardworking ants and the busy bees stopped their work as the Ox walked slowly by. They had never seen any creature as big as the Ox. Not even the old Frog on the lily pad in the stream was quite this big! The Ox munched happily on the sweet grass. He did not even notice the tiny creatures.

موجودات کوچک در چمنزار با ترس و هیبت به گاو نر خیره شده بودند. پروانه‌ها با عجله از کنارش پرواز می‌کردند. مورچه‌های پرتلاش و زنبورهای پرمشغله هنگامی که گاو نر آرام از کنارشان عبور می‌کرد، کار خود را متوقف می‌کردند. آن‌ها تا به حال موجودی به این بزرگی گاو نر ندیده بودند. حتی قورباغه پیری که روی گل سوسن سفید بود، به این اندازه بزرگ نبود. گاو با خوشحالی علف‌های شیرین را می‌خورد. او اصلا متوجه موجودات کوچک نشده بود.

The Frog heard the dragonflies chattering excitedly among themselves about the huge monster who had come to live in the meadow. The dragonflies had heard it from the bumblebee who had heard it from the ladybird who had heard it from the ants who had almost been trampled on by the monster as it stomped by.

قورباغه شنید که سنجاقک‌ها در میان خودشان با هیجان درباره هیولای بزرگی که برای زندگی به چمنزار آمده صحبت می‌کنند. سنجاقک‌ها از زنبور عسلی شنیدند که آن را از کفش‌دوزکی که از مورچه‌هایی که تقریبا نزدیک بود زیر پای هیولا له شوند، شنیده بود.

'It is the largest, biggest, most enormous creature you ever saw!' cried the dragonflies. It has huge curving horns on its head and a tail so long and so strong that one whisk of it is enough to blow us all away!"

سنجاقک‌ها فریاد می‌زدند "این بزرگ‌ترین، عظیم‌الجثه‌ترین موجودی است که تا به حال دیده‌ام!". او شاخ‌های بزرگ و خمیده‌ای روی سرش دارد و یک ضربه‌ی دم بلند و قوی او کافی است تا همه‌ی ما را از بین ببرد!"

The Frog did not believe a word that the dragonflies said. 'Ha! This monster of yours cannot be bigger than I am!’ he cried. ‘And horns and a tail, bah! They cannot be more fearsome than my long sticky tongue!'

قورباغه حرفی که سنجاقک‌ زد را باور نکرد. فریاد زد "ها! این هیولای شما نمی‌تواند از من بزرگ‌تر باشد! و شاخ‌ها و دم‌اش نمی‌تواند از زبان بلند و چسبناک من خطرناک‌تر باشد!"

How could any creature be bigger than him? Was he not the largest, most magnificent frog in the world? The dragonflies were just being rude!

چگونه می‌شود موجودی بزرگ‌تر از او باشد؟ آیا او بزرگ‌ترین و باشکوه‌ترین قورباغه دنیا نبود؟ سنجاقک‌ها واقعا بی‌ادب بودند!

The Frog stuck out his long sticky tongue and would have caught at least a dozen of the dragonflies had they not dodged in time.

قورباغه زبان بلند و چسبناک خود را بیرون آورد و اگر سنجاقک‌ها به موقع در نمی‌رفتند، حداقل دو جین از آن‌ها را می‌گرفت.

Just then the Ox strolled down to the stream. He was thirsty and wanted a drink.

درست در همان زمان، گاو نر به سمت رودخانه قدم زد. تشنه بود و می‌خواست آبی بنوشد.

The dragonflies trembled in fear and rose up in a great shining cloud far above the reach of the Ox's curving horns and long tail.

سنجاقک‌ها از ترس می‌لرزیند و خود را تا بالای مه درخشان روی رودخانه که مرتفع‌تر از شاخ‌های خمیده گاو نر بود، بالا کشیدند.

The Ox drank his fill and walking away from the stream, settled down for a nap.

گاو یک دل سیر آب نوشید و از رودخانه دور شد تا چرتی بزند.

The old Frog on his lily pad saw the Ox and wondered what all the fuss was about. The terrible monster was nothing but a silly old Ox! And not a very large one either! When the Ox had walked away, he called out. ‘Hey. dragonflies, was this your terrible monster?’

قورباغه‌ی پیری که روی گل سوسن بود، گاو نر را دید و متوجه شد که این همه هیاهو برای چه بود. هیولای وحشتناک چیزی جز یک گاو پیر احمق نبود! حتی خیلی هم بزرگ نبود! هنگامی که گاو دور شد قورباغه فریاد زد "هی سنجاقک‌ها، این بود هیولای ترسناک شما؟"

The dragonflies rustled their shining wings and replied. ‘Yes, yes. Frog! Did you see how big he is?’

سنجاقک‌ها بال‌های درخشان خود را به حرکت درآوردند و پاسخ دادند "بله، بله قورباغه! آیا دیدی چقدر بزرگ است؟"

The Frog laughed scornfully. 'Big? You call that big? Why, I can be twice as big as that if I want to! Watch!"

قورباغه با تمسخر خندید و گفت " بزرگ؟ شما به آن می‌گویید بزرگ؟ چرا؟ اگر بخواهم می‌توانم دو برابر او باشم! فقط نگاه کن!"

And the Frog took a deep breath, huffed and puffed and swelled up like a balloon.

قورباغه نفس عمیقی کشید و پف کرد و پف کرد؛ درست مانند یک بادکنک.

'There! Am I not as big as him now?' he asked the watching dragonflies, speaking with a little difficulty.

به سختی از سنجاقک‌هایی که تماشا می‌کردند پرسید "هی! آیا حالا من به اندازه‌ی او بزرگ نیستم؟"

'Oh no. Frog, not yet!' cried the dragonflies. 'The monster is MUCH bigger. Look at him sleeping in the grass! He looks huge!'

سنجاقک‌ها فریاد زدند "اوه نه! نه هنوز! هیولا خیییلی بزرگ‌تر است. روی علف‌ها خوابیده نگاه کن! ببین چقدر عظیم‌الجثه است!"

‘Well, then. Watch me!' said the Frog. He took a deep breath, huffed and puffed and swelled up some more. ‘I must be bigger than him now!' he gasped.

قورباغه گفت "خب پس، من را تماشا کن! نفس عمیقی کشید، پف کرد و کمی بیشتر باد کرد. با نفس نفس گفت "حالا باید از او بزرگ‌تر باشم."

‘Ah no, Frog.’ Cried the dragonflies.

‘The monster is MUCH bigger!’

سنجاقک‌ها فریاد زدند "او نه قورباغه! هیولا خیییلی بزرگ‌تر است."

The Frog was quite irritated with the dragonflies. His skin was feeling tight and stretched. It was difficult to sit As he felt he would roll over any moment and his cheeks were so puffed that his eyes were almost squeezed shut. He could barely see over his huge belly. He was sure he must be at least as big as the Ox by now! He decided to make one more attempt. He would show the dragonflies who was bigger!

قورباغه واقعا از دست سنجاقک‌ها عصبانی بود. پوستش احساس تنگی و کشیدگی داشت. نشستن برایش سخت بود، چون امکان داشت هر لحظه قل بخورد. گونه‌هایش به شکلی پف کرده بود که چشم‌هایش تقریبا بسته بودند. به سختی می‌توانست بالای شکم گنده‌اش را ببیند. او مطمئن بود که تا الان حداقل هم اندازه گاو نر شده است! قورباغه تصمیم گرفت بار دیگر تلاش کند به سنجاقک‌ها نشان دهد چه کسی بزرگ‌تر است!

“Watch me,' he squeaked with great difficulty.

با سختی تمام فریاد زد "من را تماشا کنید."

He took as deep a breath as he could manage, huffed and puffed and swelled. He blew and he blew and he blew and he grew larger and larger and larger till suddenly. POP!

تا جایی که می‌توانست یک نفس عمیق کشید، خودش را باد کرد، پف کرد و متورم شد. خودش را باد کرد و باد کرد و باد کرد و بزرگ‌تر شد و بزرگ‌تر شد و بزرگ‌تر تا ناگهان… پااااف!
