داستان شغال نیلی

In a jungle there lived a pack of jackals. They would hunt together to eat from the left-overs of the lion’s meal. One of the jackals was getting a little old. All the younger jackals bullied him and did not allow him to share the food.

دسته‌ای از شغال‌ها در جنگلی زندگی می‌کردند. آن‌ها با هم شکار می‌کردند تا از باقی مانده‌ی غذای شیر بخورند. یکی از شغال‌ها کمی پیر شده بود. همه‌ی شغال‌های جوان‌تر او را اذیت می‌کردند و به او اجازه نمی‌دانند غذا را تقسیم کند.

"I have to do something to satisfy my hunger. Like this, I will not survive for very long," thought the jackal to himself.

شغال با خود فکر می‌کرد "باید کاری کنم تا گرسنگی‌ام برطرف شود. اینطوری خیلی نمی‌توانم زنده بمانم."

He decided to leave his pack and go in search of food. He wandered around for many days but could not find any food. Everywhere he went, other animals chased him away.

او تصمیم گرفت دسته‌ی شغال‌ها را رها کند و به دنبال غذا بگردد. او روزهای زیادی در اطراف سرگردان بود، اما نتوانست غذایی پیدا کند. هر جایی که می‌رفت حیوانات دیگر او را دور می‌کردند.

Finally he decided to venture into the village in search of food. After nightfall, the jackal walked down the village streets in search of food. Suddenly a pack of dogs began to chase the jackal. Scared for his life, the jackal ran as fast as his weak legs could carry him. Finding no way of escape, the jackal jumped into the first open house he found.

سرانجام تصمیم گرفت برای پیدا کردن غذا به روستایی برود. بعد از پایان شب، شغال برای پیدا کردن غذا در خیابان‌های روستا قدم زد. ناگهان دسته‌ای از سگ‌ها را دید که شروع به فراری دادن او کردند. شغال از ترس جانش تا جایی که پاهای ضعیفش توان حمل او را داشت با سرعت فرار کرد. از آن جایی که راهی برای فرار پیدا نکرد؛داخل اولین خانه‌ای که باز بود پرید.

Suddenly he found himself in a vat of foul smelling liquid. It was a vat of indigo dye. The house belonged to the village washer man. When the jackal climbed hurriedly out of the liquid and peered out fearfully, the dogs which were waiting for him outside, let out a howl and ran away with their tails tucked between their legs. The jackal was surprised. But finding the dogs gone, he carefully went back into the jungle.

او ناگهان خودش را در یک خمره با مایع بو دار دید. آن یک خمره به رنگ نیلی بود. خانه متعلق به خشک‌شویی روستا بود. هنگامی که شغال از خمره مایع بیرون پرید و با ترس به بیرون نگاه کرد، سگ‌هایی که در بیرون منتظر او بودند، زوزه کشیدند و با دم‌های روی کولشان فرار کردند. شغال تعجب کرد. اما با رفتن سگ‌ها با احتیاط به جنگل برگشت.

The jackal went to the water hole in the jungle to quench his thirst. As the jackal went closer, all the other animals which had come there ran away in panic. The jackal looked around in surprise to see what had frightened them. But he saw nothing wrong. He was very thirsty and so went to the water hole to quench his thirst. As he bent down to drink, he was shocked to see a strange looking creature in a brilliant and unearthly colour looking up at him from the water. The jackal was first frightened, but soon realised that he was looking at his own reflection. He remembered the foul smelling liquid into which he had fallen. “So that is why all those dogs and all these animals in the forest were afraid!" he reasoned to himself. His cunning mind thought of a plan quickly.

شغال برای رفع تشنگی به چاله‌ی آبی که در جنگل بود رفت. هر چه شغال نزدیک‌تر می‌شد، تمام حیواناتی که به آنجا آمده بودند، از ترس فرار می‌کردند. شغال با تعجب به اطراف نگاه می‌کرد تا ببیند چه چیزی آن‌ها ترسانده است. اما چیزی ندید. او خیلی تشنه بود بنابراین به سمت چاله آب رفت تا تشنگی‌اش را برطرف کند. هنگامی که خم شد تا آب بنوشد، با دیدن موجودی عجیب با رنگی غیر معمولی که از داخل آب به او نگاه می‌کرد، شوکه شد. شغال ابتدا ترسید، اما خیلی زود متوجه شد که به بازتاب خودش در آب نگاه می‌کند. به یاد مایع بدبویی افتاد که در آن افتاده بود. با خود فکر کرد "آها! برای همین همه‌ی آن سگ‌ها و تمام حیوانات جنگل ترسیده بودند." ذهن حیله‌گر او سریع یک نقشه کشید.

He called out to the frightened animals. “Do not be afraid of me. I have been sent down by Brahma to protect you." The animals all believed him at once and made him king.

او حیوانات وحشت زده را صدا زد "از من نترسید، من از طرف براهاما برای حفاظت از شما فرستاده شده‌ام." همه حیوانات او را باور کردند و او را پادشاه خود خواندند.

As the days went by, the jackal became prouder and lazier. He did not have to look for food any longer. His subjects would bring him food to cat and take care of every need of his. The jackal was very happy with his life.

با گذشت روزها، شغال مغرورتر و تنبل‌تر می‌شد. او دیگر نیازی به جست‌وجوی غذا نداشت. رعایای او برایش غذا می‌اوردند و نیازهایش را برطرف می‌کردند. شغال از زندگی‌اش بسیار خوشحال بود.

One full moon night, the pack of jackals to whom the jackal had belonged before began to howl at the moon. The indigo jackal had not heard his brothers howl for a long time. The urge to howl was too strong for him to control. He threw back his head and began to howl to hisheart’scontent.

یک شب که ماه کامل بود، دسته‌ای از شغال‌ها که شغال نیلی قبلا عضو آن‌ها بود، شروع به زوزه کشیدن کردند. مدت‌ها بود که شغال نیلی صدای برادرانش را نشنیده بود. میل او به زوزه کشیدن بسیار قوی بود و او نمی‌توانست آن را کنترل کند. سرش را به عقب برد و شروع به زوزه کشیدن کرد تا دلش راضی شود.

The other animals were astonished to hear their heaven sent king howl like a common jackal. And soon they realised their mistake.

حیوانات دیگر از این که پادشاه بهشتی‌شان مثل یک شغال معمولی زوزه می‌کشد، حیرت زده شدند. و خیلی زود متوجه اشتباهشان شدند.

“This is no extraordinary animal sent by Brahma. He howls like a jackal," said the bear. “Yes. He is calling out to the other jackals." “He has fooled us." “He has to be punished," said several other animals. “Come let’s teach him a lesson." The animals joined together and gave the indigo jackal a severe beating.

خرس گفت “این حیوان شگفت‌انگیزی نیست که به وسیله برهاما فرستاده شده است. او مثل شغال زوزه می‌کشد." چند حیوان دیگر گفتند " بله. او شغال‌های دیگر را صدا می‌زند. او ما را فریب داد. باید تنبیه شود. بیایید به او یک درس بدهیم." حیوانات با هم جمع شدند و شغال نیلی را یک دست کتک مفصل زدند.
