Australian culture is very unique

and has many features and characteristics

that makes it really different

from any other countries Around the world.

I myself have lived there for about 5 years

and I want to give you some tips based on my experience.

If you’re planning to go to Australia

there are 8 things that

you should know about their culture.

The first one:

Australians are very friendly people

Generally speaking Australians are very friendly,

honest and open minded people.

As an example if you are on the street and you see a stranger

you generally smile and you say hi to them.

Most likely they’re going to smile back and say hi to you.

Apart from friendly,

Australians are very funny people as well.

They like to make fun and tell jokes.

Look at that cat!

If you are going to Australia for the first time

you might find it a bit challenging

to understand some of their jokes.

So the tip is not to take thing too serious

and go with the flow.

If you don’t understand the jokes, you will after a while.

Number two:

Australians love their sports.

It doesn’t matter what the sport is.

Whether it’s football, whether it’s cricket or rugby

Or any other sports,

Australians are very competitive in sports,

and Australian fans love to back their home team

regardless of the sport they’re playing.

So if your home country is going there

and playing against Australia

be ready to face hard core fans along with their teams.

Number 3:

no specific religion

Most Australians don’t follow any specific religion

and some of them don’t follow any religion at all.

Even though they don’t follow any religion,

they openly accept the practice of any other religion.

So if you’re going to Australia, don’t worry

it will be OK to practice your own religion.

Number 4:

Meeting etiquette

Australians are casual in nature

but when meeting them for the first time

make sure to shake hands with them

And they usually like a firm handshake.

It’s very important to have eye contact

with the person you’re talking to.

Not looking in the eyes seems disrespectful

and seems like you’re not telling the truth.

And as friendly as they are,

if you meet Australians for the first time

don’t try to get too close to them,

as they don’t feel very comfortable about it.

Number 5:

Australians love their slang

So, if you’re wanting to tell someone no,

you would say yeah nah.

or if you’re wanting to say yes, you’d say: nah yeah.

When I first came here, I didn’t know what an amber was.

It’s an ambulance

Australians try to abbreviate everything they say.

You might feel a little bit overwhelmed

with the abbreviation or the slang Australians use

and if you don’t understand the slangs

it’s a good idea to ask them to repeat the thing again

and tell them you’re new here

and you don’t understand the slangs.

Australia/ straya

Football/ footy

Tennis ball/ tenno

Biscuit/ Biccy

Chocolate/ choccy

Chocolate biscuit/ choccy Biccy

And saying hi or hello is much better than saying gooday mate

if you’re new there.

Number 6:

no discrimination or racism

Australians are very much against discrimination

and racism in everyday life.

It’s illegal in Australia to discriminate people

based in their color,race, religion,

gender or any other attribute.

And Australians certainly don’t like to discriminate people.

Overall it’s not that their is no racism

or discrimination in Australia

but you will rarely find them happening in the country.

Number 7:

Australians don’t tip the waiters and the waitresses

So if you’re working in the hospitality industry

as a waiter or a waitress or even in the kitchen areas

don’t expect to get any tips.

Generally

the wages and salaries in Australia are really good.

The minimum wage per hour in Australia is $19.49 cents

that’s why they don’t tip people in Australia.

public transport etiquette

When boarding public transport in Australia

you must give way to the exiting passengers first.

It’s very important not to eat

while traveling on public transport in Australia.

As you might even end up getting a penalty for that.

And it’s a good idea not to talk too loud on a public transport

especially when you’re on your phone.
