Lay و Lie فرقشون چیه؟

Today’s lesson is about the difference between

to lay

to lie

and to lie.

It’s not hard

but a little bit confusing

even for native speakers.

To lay means

place carefully on a surface.

For example:

I lay this pen on the book.

Or

please lay the gun on the ground sir.

Lay down your weapons!

Lay down your sword!

If you but lay down your arms

The past tense is:

For example:

My father laid his hand on my shoulder.

Or

she was in pain

so we laid her down on the couch.

we laid her down on her back

we laid her down

We laid our weapons down

The past participle is:

For example:

The bird has laid an egg.

I have laid the bag full of money on the ground.

I have laid an egg.

And the next word is:

This is a completely different word

and there is no connection within these 2 words.

To lie means:

to move to a horizontal position

For example:

for present tense

when I feel dizzy

I lie down for a few minutes.

Today, I’m going to lie down on my bed

and watch Friends.

Lie yourself down!

Lie down Lie down

Lie down before you hurt yourself!

Now the past tense of lie

is lay.

This is exactly why people get confused!

They are written and pronounced the same

but they are different words.

Like Donald Trump and Donald Duck

the spelling looks the same

but one of them goes QUAK QUAK QUAK

and the other one is Donald Duck.

For example:

we lay on the ground and looked at the stars.

Or

the dog lay under the desk and slept.

That he lay down his life for his friends.

When he lay in the coffin after his trolley accident!

The past participle is:

which is hardly ever used

I’ll give you an example

I came into the room

and I saw someone has already lain on my bed.

I’ve lain awake nights thinking of you.

And the third one is:

which means not to tell the truth.

For example:

My dad promised to take me to Disneyland

but he didn’t, he lied!

You lied to me

well she told me to!

OK

so now you’ve got 3 completely different words

which just sounds similar

and there is no reason to get confused!
