First you have to know what a suffix is.
A suffix is a group of letters
or a single letter
added to the end of a word.
The suffix
changes the word’s function and meaning.
Common suffixes include:
s, ed, ing, er, est
and
ful.
But there are many more.
Generally,
when a suffix is added,
the base form remains unchanged.
For example;
dogs,
talked,
washing.
But sometimes
we do need to change the base word
if a word ends in y,
it often needs to be changed
before adding a suffix.
The good news is:
there is a rule we can follow.
When the base word ends with a y,
we have to change y to i
before adding a suffix.
Studied,
happier,
craziest.
There are 2 exceptions:
Number 1:
If the base word contains a vowel
directly before the final y,
the y stays as it is.
For example:
plays,
stayed,
enjoyable.
Number 2:
If the suffix begins with an i,
then the y stays as it is.
For example:
The y changes into an i in
carried
and
carries,
but not in carrying.
The y is changed in hurried,
and hurries,
but not in hurrying.
There are some words that break the rule
and are exceptions,
we don’t change the y in
dry
or
shy
when writing dryness
or shyness
or dryly
or shyly.

که به آخر کلمه اضافه میشه.
پسوند
نقش و معنی کلمه رو تغییر میده.
پسوندهای متداول اینا هستن:
s, ed, ing, er, est
و
ful
اما کلی دیگه هم هستند.
به طور کلی
وقتی پسوند اضافه میشه
شکل اصلی کلمه بدون تغییر باقی میمونه.
برای مثال
dogs
talked
washing
اما گاهی اوقات
باید شکل اصلی کلمه رو تغییر بدیم
اگه کلمه با y تموم شه
معمولا قبل از اضافه کردن پسوند
لازمه که تغییر کنه.
خبر خوب اینه که:
یه قانونی وجود داره که میتونیم ازش پیروی کنیم.
وقتی کلمه‌ی اصلی با y تموم میشه
باید y رو به i تغییر بدیم
قبل از اینکه پسوند رو اضافه کنیم.

شماره یک:
اگه کلمه‌ی اصلی دقیقا قبل از y انتهایی
حرف مصوت داشته باشه
اون y همونطور که هست میمونه.
برای مثال:
plays
stayed

شماره دو:
اگه پسوند با i شروع بشه
در این صورت y همونطوری که هست میمونه.
مثلا:
y در این کلمات به i تغییر میکنه.
carried
و
carries
اما تو carrying تغییری نمیکنه.
y تو hurried
و hurries تغییر میکنه
اما تو hurrying تغیر نمیکنه.
یه سری از کلمات هستند که از این قانون پیروی نمیکنن
و استثنا هستند
ما y رو تو کلمات
dry
یا
shy
موقع نوشتن dryness
یا shyness تغییر نمیدیم
یا dryly
یا shyly.
